A Forecasting Platform User Earned $436K from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.

A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule introduced on recently seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
